Is Your Water Supply Affecting Your Hair?

Although water is a fundamental element of our everyday lives, many of us do not realize the specific role it plays when it comes to our hair. The water supply in the area in which you live can either be classified as hard or soft, and has a direct effect on the overall appearance and feel of your hair. When you do your daily wash in the shower, you are exposing your hair to the water supply, and it makes a bigger difference than you would think. Your water supply just might be the culprit behind the unexplained damage, dullness or greasiness of your hair.

HARD WATER

It is estimated that more than 85% of the water supply within the United States can be classified at some level of "hard" water.

The term "hard water" describes water that has high amounts of magnesium and calcium deposits. These minerals decrease shampoo's ability to lather, and make hair both dry and frizzy. The excess of minerals combine with shampoo and conditioner to form magnesium and calcium salts that stick to hair, and leave it dull and straw-like. Overtime, the use of hard water may cause hair to grow thinner and be more prone to both breakage and falling out.

If you are one who struggles with hard water hair, there are solutions that can help keep your hair both nourished and healthy. The first is to add a weekly deep conditioning treatment that moisturizes your hair and helps prevent future damage and breakage. At Jade Organic Salon we sell an all organic, chemical free deep conditioning product that will leave your hair smooth and radiant. Another trick to combat hard water hair is to use a clarifying shampoo which specifically penetrates minerals in water. This is an essential part of our clients' experience as they receive a fifteen minute clarifying treatment at every appointment before our stylists apply any color to their heads.

SOFT WATER

Soft water contains low levels of calcium and magnesium, and higher amounts of sodium. It feels smoother on the skin and allows shampoo to achieve it's full lathering capabilities. However, soft water leaves hair feeling more greasy, weighed down and limp overall. This is especially true for individuals who have finer hair, and experience a slippery feeling when it comes to their locks.

What is recommended is to incorporate conditioner into your shower routine only every-other wash; so, you are not weighing your hair down with more oils. If at any point your hair becomes completely unmanageable, at Jade Organic Salon we offer free consultations for new clients in which we explore every aspect of your everyday life from your water supply, to your diet, and everything in between. We believe your health and beauty can be impacted by your everyday routine, and we want to work together to make both you and your hair happy. Our stylists are equipped with the skills and top of the line organic products to restore the natural beauty to your hair healthy.
